My spousebeast, the city boy

How is that even POSSIBLE when he did most of his growing up in Iredell County, NC and rural Delaware?

We lost power shortly after my last post (actually, I was in the middle of a rant-y email to G re: my mother.  It's kind of odd to rant to the boys' stepmom, I know, but she's had at least a taste of the crazy of dealing with my mother.  And I guess it's no weirder than Kent's first wife getting defensive on my account over the way my sister talks down to me on FB).

Eighteen hours.  Not bad, all told, but I have a sneaking feeling the ricotta and the mayo in the fridge may not have survived the ordeal.  Thank the gods I usually do the grocery shopping on Fridays, because this week's list is mostly perishables (The Great Ravioli Experiment, v. 3 is taking place this weekend).  I just checked, and all of the stuff in the freezer is still frozen.  Could have been much, much worse.

Boy howdy, though, did this throw into relief my life experiences vs. Kent's.  I knew we were looking at hours (although, frankly, I'm surprised it took as long as it did.  We live a few blocks from the police station, so that's usually a priority).  When I lived in the mountains of SW Virginia with my ex, 8-10 DAYS without power happened at least every other year.  Try no way to get out (the nearest paved road was +/- 1/2 mile from the house), no water (we had a well), and melting snow for formula on a propane grill.  THAT sucks.

He acted like it was the End Times.  Good grief...we still had enough hot water so he could have a shower this morning!  And we have a gas stove, so it isn't like we would have starved.  He didn't have to dig a latrine.

[To give y'all an idea of where I used to live, Whitetop Mountain was the view out of my loft bedroom window: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whitetop_Mountain]

I mostly found it annoying, because I missed Survivor and Law & Order: SVU.  But it was kind of cool to sit around by candlelight and just talk, ya know?  It's not like we don't talk, but there is something about sitting in the dark, with no distractions, that changes the way you communicate.

He did NOT find it amusing when I said I kind of wish this happened every so often.  He's blaming it on my recent habit of binge watching Little House on the Prairie.

Ths morning, since there was no way to make coffee, he decided to go in early for breakfast and invited me to come with.  I was going to invite myself along anyway--there is no reason I would have put on real pants and a bra at 6 in the morning otherwise--but it was very sweet that he asked.  <3  And I can safely say that the home fries at UNC Hospital are AMAZING, if not quite as good as mine (actually, they have really good food, especially if you consider it's, you know, hospital food).

I stopped by Walgreens on the way home (ours gouges the hell out of you for most everything, but they are the cheapest deal on toilet paper and disposable razors in town) and found fleece lined leggings on clearance for $3.19 a pair.  SCORE!  And I have racked up enough points on my frequent buyer card thingy for a $20 gift card, so I might go back and get a couple more, now that I know the M/L actually fits my hips AND covers my legs without being capri length.  Shame the black ones aren't on clearance, but I can rock maroon and red.  And who gives a fuck, as long as they're warm?

I will say they were nice and cozy when I came home and the house was 65F.  Not terrible, but a little chilly when you've been strolling around in weather running at about 35F with the windchill and no remaining hot water for a shower to warm up.  Leggings, sweatshirt, and fuzzy socks FTW!

I have become such a weather wimp.  Also, I should not have had two cups of coffee this morning, because I have the attention span of a gerbil on crack.

Enough babbling.  Time to see what's salvage-worthy in the fridge.  Pray for the ricotta, y'all.  :)

With a 3 year old, an 18 month old, and an oversized toddler disguised as an adult. Whee!

This was nothing.

I can't comprehend it. I don't think I've ever been without power for more than a couple of hours at most. Your country is so big sometimes, it's easy to forget that a lot of it is really rural.
