LJI Week 14: Campfire Stories

The fire crackles, lovely against a blanket of stars.  Rare to get so far away from streetlights and stoplights and those damned new headlights that seemed bent on blinding anyone who wanders in their path.

The flames have that lovely blue tint at the base from wood well aged.  Younger pine was added to catch the flame, and it sends up sparks to rival the stars.

The liquid in the red plastic cup I was handed isn't entirely unpleasant.  Someone in his family line clearly knew how to brew, and at least current generations have learned to not thin it with so much kerosene that it kills their new, city born and bred customers.

"So, guys...huddle up to your girls.  It's time for scary stories!"

(Oh, fuck.  Seriously?  How does this even still work?)

Evolution in reverse.  That's the only explanation.  I drain my cup.

Right on cue, another cup appears.  I smile wanly.

"Hi.  I saw you were sitting alone.  I thought...maybe I could join you?".

I smile shyly.  I remember to try to hide behind my glasses, then look up.  "Okay.  I mean, if you want to."

(Now the story starts.  I'm an English major this time, so I have to critque in my head.)

Witch in the woods (okay, not totally inaccurate)  Stunningly beautiful (style points for blatant flattery).  Then the banal lures men to the woods, seduces them, yadda yadda yadda and they turn into trees or some sort of bullshit.

I roll my eyes at my newfound "date."  He smiles back.  "My friends are kind of stupid.  Wanna go for a walk?"

I take his hand, which is unsurpisingly clammy.  "Well, I wasn't surprised that they didn't know basic Authurian legend."

"Huh?"

It's quick because I'm annoyed.  I take in a deep breath, stretch in the new body afforded me, and slip into the circle around the fire, unnoticed.

"I swear, Taliesin, send me one of those again, and I'll turn you into a ficus tree next time."

He gives me a knowing look.  "We could always see how well skinny dipping with the young ones goes next time."

I pitch another piece of wood on the fire, then gaze up at the stars.  And sigh.

Stupid fucking stories.  Never can get away from them.

Intriguing. I'd be interested in reading more from these characters.

Thank you! This was my first piece with these characters, but I think there might be more.

Have you written on this before? You have a great beginning that really caught my interest. I loved the comment "evolution in reverse."

No. But I'm starting to think we haven't seen the last of these two.

Hearing those same stories again and again would get dull, but if you're the subject of those stories AND they're wrong, how much more irritating?
