LJI: Invitation

I always choose them with such care: Holly Hobbie, Strawberry Shortcake, kittens with party hats.  When I got older and more sophisticated (also known as third grade), I would write out "RSVP at your earliest convenience" in careful, Palmer Method cursive at the bottom of each one.

EJ's mom says "Tell your mama we're coming" at drop off.

Cindy's mom says "I told your mama we'd be there with bells on.  And party hats!"

Everyone else is at the beach.  It is Memorial Day weekend, after all.

It happens year after year until mom declares a ban on inviting my classmates and that my two best friends (and my annoying little sister) will go to Pizza Hut, get individual pan pizzas, and little bags of quarters to play video games or songs on the jukebox.  And, since it was just us, we could afford an ice cream cake from Dairy Queen, instead of that plastic-tasting stuff from Food City.

***
The flyer is slipped into my locker.
"Stinkyfinger presents:  A night of Duran Duran songs in honor of Alicia's 18th Birthday!  Come early to see the birthday girl, because we all know she has a curfew."

Written in familiar script at the bottom:  "I talked to Deborah, and she agreed to let you stay out until 10.  I'll pick you up and take you back home.  And you are NOT hauling amps on your birthday, so dress accordingly."

I carefully refold the note, run to the girls' bathroom, and tuck it into my padded bra.

***
"So you and mama have the same birthday?"

I'm helping make the slow, halting steps down the hall.  "Yup."

Her daughter looks crestfallen.  "Oh, so you'll be off..."

"Nope.  I'll be here.  Who else is gonna get the disco ball and the open bar and the band and maybe some strippers?"

Then there is that laugh, and the arm around my shoulders.  The vigorous nod and the kiss on my cheek.

Clearly, Bev and I have some invitations to write.  And an activities director who might get fired if she gives into my/our demands.

Happy birthday, Bev.  Happy birthday to us.  Thank you for the invitation into your life.

Aww, I thought you were taking your birthday off. But this is a cool way to celebrate at work.

Also, I loved Holly Hobbie as a girl. I am not too taken with the new Holly Hobbie, but that is because I used to have dresses in the old style. That should make a comeback.

No, because all of my coworkers are going to Bike Week. They put in their time before mine.

BUT, I get the following weekend off to go to ConCarolinas. And see Voltaire. And be with MY PEOPLE. There is a serious dearth of geeks where I work.

I'm dealing with that also as the parent of a child with a memorial day weekend birthday. We'll get whomever we get at his birthday party on Sunday. But I'm thinking about holding his party either the weekend before or the weekend after next year.

Happy Birthday! I had one birthday at the Disco where I DJed. Definitely fun, but every night I DJed was at least mildly entertaining.

I loved the three parts to this! Having a holiday birthday is tough. But sharing a birthday must be fun.

Holidays and birthdays don't always mix, but these sound like you have fun times anyway. Happy Birthday!

This was like looking at a stranger's polaroids: intriguing yet somehow familiar, and causing a curious mind to flood with questions. Nice job!

I loved how you captured that as you grow up, where you are in life kind of dictates how you are going to celebrate your birthday. I remember writing those little invitations as a kid... and then having my friends basically just "telling" me or "surprising" me as a teen... and then having "life" take over the planning when I became an adult. Happy Birthday!! And even though "life" said you have to work I'm glad you're making the best of it and still getting your chance to celebrate!! I hope you have fun!! ❤️❤️

Happy recent birthday!

Having one that tends to fall on a holiday weekend would be about as hard as having one in the middle of summer. All your friends are gone!

I liked the snapshots of birthdays over time, and congrats to Bev on the birthday you both share. :)

So cool! I would love to share a birthday with a family member, or even a friend.

Con and Voltaire soon sound awesome. This was a lovely entry- I really liked how the sections flowed into each other, and you will be missed.
