Day off, my ass

Got up at six this morning to see Kent off to his day long training for the school system (I almost died laughing that he has a whole hour long class on "How to read a recipe."  I told him to make sure to take lots and lots of good, detailed notes.  He really hates my sense of humor in the morning).  I even packed him a lunch, because he doesn't know the area around the training center well.

It was oddly like sending a kid off to their first day at a new school.  And he was about as nervous.

I'm so used to seeing him in chefs pants, a tshirt, and a ballcap, that it's a little weird to see him in a dress shirt and cords.

[ETA: While I was typing, he called on his break.  He sounds really excited and inspired.  Yay!  ]

I spent the morning puttering around the kitchen after giving up on going back to sleep (when the time comes to get a new phone, I am getting one where it is possible to mute the ringer AND the answering machine).  Between going back to volunteer at St. Joe's once or twice a week and some early morning covert gardening,   we've been swimming in salsas and spreads and sauces.

(There's local restaurant that shall remain nameless that plants a little "kitchen garden" with herbs and peppers...and then just leaves everything to rot.  It's all for show.  I find that reprehensible in the extreme, especially for a place that espouses locally sourced  and farm-to-table beliefs.  So, I tidy things up a bit for them from time to time on my way to work.  *ahem*)

Kent's also been bringing home the white ends of green onions from work, because they just use the green ends (I did the same thing when I worked at McAlisters.  We hate waste.  Is it obvious?).  So I threw them, some jalapenos, and a box of heirloom cherry tomatoes from St. Joe's on the grill pan, blistered them up, and made charred tomato salsa.  The color is a little murky due to the multicolored tomatoes, but I'm pleased with the overall taste...especially since a)  I was winging it and b) we had no garlic (HOW DID WE ALLOW THIS TO HAPPEN!?!?!?!?).

I also made a serrano-infused honey.  I want to try a riff on hot chicken sometime soon.  The stuff is good, but *deadly*  I really want to make some lavender simple syrup for the box of lavender earl grey tea I got the other week, but that may have to wait for another covert gardening operation.

I could have spent all day doing this, but I had to go pick up my check after 2.  *grumble*  I'd've put it off until tomorrow, but we need the money in the bank by then....so up the hill I go.

This whole lack of direct deposit thing annoys the CRAP out of me.  It disrupted my entire day.  And I missed The Chew. *grumblegrumblegrumble*

Okay, yeah...that's a small thing, but having lunch while I watch The Chew is one of my weekday day off rituals.  It's dorky, I know.

Speaking of small things, the current reduction in hours is starting to REALLY hurt.  And I have another sucky schedule.  I am going to ask for a meeting with M to find out WHY I show up for every shift, come early and stay late, am always on my feet on the floor, never take longer than my scheduled break....and MY hours are getting cut.

I'm starting to consider my mouth might be part of the problem, because I am getting burnt out and sarcastic.  When I'm running around, doing all of the one-person changes, and you look up from your phone and say "What can I do to help?"  I probably shouldn't say "You can start with putting down your phone and doing your job."

Help?  HELP?  We were hired to do the same fucking thing!  You are not "helping."  You're earning your fucking paycheck.  It's like when one parent refers to spending time with the kids as babysitting.

ARRRGH!

Another point to ponder:  when I swung by to see my people and drop off another pile of magazines, the med tech and both aides were in the office with the door partly shut, gossipping and playing with their phones.  There was NO ONE with a clear view of the common area.

I asked about our 2 residents in ICU (one had a stroke and one is suffering complications from diabetes. I'm not entirely surprised in either case.  Miz J has been struggling.  Her breathing treatments haven't been helping, and the hospice nurses have been coming in every day to wrap her legs because they can't find compression hose big enough to stop the swelling.  Miz L, because I swear she has some covert way to shoot up sugar water when no one is looking.   And it has gotten worse since her husband--who was on the AL side--got declared fit to go home with his daughter.  I think she wants to die).  No good news there.  M the Useless Medtech casually mentioned "You notice this stuff never happens on our shift.  Now, we're slack, but...."

Okay, you just snapped your gum and admitted first shift is slack!?!?!?  The fact that we haven't had a patient death yet is not a point of pride.  And I've broken up THREE patient "incidents" this month because y'all had your fucking earbuds in. Or were sitting outside smoking.

I excused myself, made my rounds to say hi to everyone (and the various reactions to seeing me in my civvies was HILARIOUS)...and ran for my check and the door.

On the upside, Noodles needs daytime counter help, and Kent's boss is willing to overlook the no couples rule because he will be greatly reducing his shifts there and works nights.  I've got my application in for that and a couple of other places around town to get extra hours.

Or get enough to just quit entirely.  I honestly believe they are trying to run me out for doing my job and making them look bad.

In other news, the spousebeast and I are late getting starting on the August Munchkin Tourney,  and he's already behind 2-1.  The prize this month is that the winner gets to pick the music we listen to once a week for the whole month of September.  I WILL WIN THIS!  The Fantasy Football fuckwittery is already starting, so I am going to need an antidote.

(And, yes, the Bristol Vixens are playing again this year.  Only because it is a joint team and Kent rolled over part of  last year's winnings into league fees without telling me.  Fine.  Guess who now has a mission to torture TinFoil Hat Boy with every post, picture, "team wisdom" and auction choice?  I am SERIOUSLY tempted to change my avatar from Evil Willow and the wisdom "Bored now" to a picture of a giant metal rooster with "Kluck, kluck, motherfucker."  That would confuse the fuck out of them)

And I am still owed my $20 at the ABC store prize.

Oooh...imagine the possibilities.  I could pick out music and make themed cocktails once a week for all of September.

Have a good evening, y'all.  I have to go design cocktails.

Hope they're cooking something to demonstrate the ability to follow a recipe. I'd be in foul mood after an hour hearing about food and not getting any to eat.

Apparently, it was all about how to scale things up/down depending on population (I died laughing because they are using the same vocabulary I used when I was working for the prison system. That says it all).

I hate waste, too. And that is really messed up that the place that is into "farm to table" is wasting their herbs like that. WTF is wrong with them? They sound like wasteful Hipsters, to me.

Good luck with either getting another job on the side or just getting out of that home altogether. It sounds like the place is going downhill and like they don't appreciate you. You might just be better off.

Good luck with the August Munchkin Tourney. I'm rooting for you!

Have fun mixing cocktails!

I hope you find something soon. I always acted better with the no couples things than my husband did. I even work with Hailey at one of my jobs and it goes well.

I think workplaces have a phone culture now, and even a headphone culture. One girl at a job wears them all the time and one of my coworkers said, "you may have to take your headphones off and get with life."

Bad practice on the farm to table.

Lunch with the Chew is one of my favorite things about unemployment. :)

Ugh, sounds like a horrid place to work not. Not because of the residents, but because of the co-workers, all the hard work but no praise, and lack of hours. My fingers and toes are crossed for you to find another job soon!

Ugh, that attitude - offering to "help" instead of acknowledging that it's their freaking job? I would snarl!

I love that you're helping make use of the little garden - how awful that they put the effort into growing food and then ignore it.

And I have to say - food at your house sounds DELICIOUS :)

I hope you are documenting the hell out of all the infractions and when you leave you share that information with anyone and everyone. Not to get anyone in trouble -- that's just a cherry on top! -- but because someone needs to know what those fuckwads are doing. And not doing.
