snow day!

I'm home!  Well, it was my scheduled day off, but there was no way I could have made it to work, anyway.  We got snow!  Whee!  [Watch this space for me bitching about it when I have to trudge up the hill at ohgodsthirty to go to work]  For some reason, staying home when we have snow seems like we're playing hooky.

Hence watching The Lego Batman Movie and having popcorn for lunch.  We made a big batch, divvied it up,and made different flavored butters.  Maybe not the healthiest meal, but it was fun.  And it gave us a chance to play with some of the ELEVENTY BILLION herb/spice/seasoning blends currently living in our spice cabinet.

The other thing we did today, after I went looking for my ginger/cinnamon sugar for my raisin toast this morning and discovered we own THREE jars of poultry seasoning, two jars of paprika, and a Costco-sized container of dill that has survived three moves without ever being used to our knowledge, was to pull out everything and start listing everything we have, put it in an order that makes sense (to us), and keep a list/diagram of what is where taped on the inside of the cabinet door.

Okay, yeah.  We'll see how long it lasts.

I have higher hopes for the pantry.  I came home yesterday after a day where I wanted to stab my co-irkers to find that the spousebeast had detail cleaned the stove AND completely organized the 6 foot tall bookshelf we call our main pantry.  Do I have to mention how much I love him for that?  Everything has a place.  I now know exactly what we have, so I won't end up with 12 pounds of sugar again.

And it's all pretty and, given the snow, it makes me feel all cozy.

I need to go through our spices in the worst way. I know we have at least 3 half-full bottles of cayenne pepper and at least that many of cracked black pepper and paprika (and garlic powder... and onion powder... and baking soda... and), and we have about 8 (no exaggeration) bags of brown sugar. Will buys new spices every time he makes chili and every time he makes his brisket rub so we have multiples upon multiples of stuff. It's crowding out some of my dishes.

Every time I find that I’m out of a spice, I’ll go to the store and buy a container of it, and put it away. Invariably, the next time I’m cooking, the old and the new containers of the spice will be on the shelf right next to each other.

I think my spice containers do that intentionally to mock me.

See my vanilla debacle on New Years Eve. I searched the pantry. HCD searched the pantry. No vanilla. Except there it was today when I went looking for cayenne pepper.

Aaah, I love getting organized! I'm currently doing a deep clean of the house, and it feels AMAZING! Making an inventory list is such a good idea, I hope you'll be able to keep it up.

I wish it would snow here.

Glad you're enjoying your day off. Why go outside at all? Lego Batman movie rules.

Glad you had such a fun snow day and got all those spices organized! Bless the house beast!

But a warning. Spices over a year old throw out. They can go bad like any other food.

Yea for snow! And here I am, just below a ski resort, and we have no snow. Send me some!

I have totally had popcorn for dinner. Absolutely nothing wrong with that. :)

It seems that most of the Pacific Northwest, except for the Cascade Mountains and the Eastern part of the state has escaped the snow, for the most part, this Winter. On Christmas Eve, we had a "dusting" with a bottom layer of freezing rain followed by a topping of sleet. Yeah. Thank goodness it melted away by mid-day Christmas morning. UGH!

Glad your things are all organized and cozy for the snowy dig in. I have a childhood friend who now lives in Virginia that called me today, talking about all the snow you all have been getting on the East coast. Watch out for the crazy drivers who don't know how to drive in it. Stay warm and safe.

With all the hard work you do, you can have all the popcorn for lunch if you want to ;)

the list in the cabinet sounds like a brilliant idea... unless in a rush you forget to update the list about stuff that you no longer have.. still great to have a recently well organised kitchen...would feel so *fresh*

Got to love a spousebeast that organizes and cleans :) I wish mine did that

And experimenting with a lot of butter flavors and eating loads of popcorn sounds like fun :)
