the irony is not lost on me

that I am filling out an application for a place that is committed to local, sustainable, healthy-yet-delicious food...while eating frozen pizza rolls.

Don't judge.  They were leftover from last night's post-Oscar midnight snack (oh, okay.  Judge) and I need something, because it will easily be midnight before those damned potatoes I bought bake.

Kent's making grilled pork chops, garlic roasted asparagus, and baked potatoes for supper tonight.  I swear, the potatoes looked smaller in the store.  *shakes head*  I love a baked potato (especially when the skin is rubbed with a bit of bacon fat and sprinkled with sea salt and coarsely ground black pepper), but it never fails that I forget how long they take to fucking cook.

You'd think after cooking them for almost 35 years, I would've learned   But I *did* learn the heresy of microwaved "baked" potatoes at an early age, so I blame Mother.  I did that for an embarrassingly long time until I found myself without a microwave and had to re-learn that a) those fuckers take hella long to bake and b) are so, so much better from the oven.

[Hours pass...]

Okay, maaaaaybe a little nap was involved after that meal.  It doesn't matter if I am up late, because I don't have to work tomorrow.  Woo-hoo!  After the hell weekend I had at work, I deserve to be a little profligate.

(I won't bore y'all with the details, but apparently some crack smoking manatees got hold of the schedule and decided I could hold down the fort by myself all weekend.  Instead, I got "help" that made me want to go scorched earth.)

Lucky for me, Kent suggested date night after I got off work Sunday.  While I hate, hate, HATE doing dates in scrubs, I was not about to miss the last matinee of 'The Greatest Showman' at The Varsity (especially since he suggested it.  He's not a fan of musicals, and has never quite forgiven me for Les Miz.  Okay, so maybe I should have corrected him when it became obvious he *grossly* underestimated how long the movie is...but I'm not always completely altruistic when it comes to ogling Hugh Jackman on the big screen).  We met up at Blue Horn Lounge for a tasty beverage beforehand, and I got mine for free because I bragged to the new bartender (young enough to be my kid. Ack!) that this was my first Chapel Hill bar, and I joined back when it was a "social club" and you had to pay a whopping $1 membership fee.  He scoffed goodnaturedly, and I whipped out my membership card (see?  There are benefits to never cleaning out your wallet).  Know what tastes better than a Lemondrop after a long day of fuckwittery?  A FREE one.

The movie was, in a word, glorious.  Exactly the escapism I need in my life right now.  I was so taken in that I *completely* forgot I had snuck in a box of Junior Mints for the popcorn (I have a suspiscion that not mentioning that I *always* have a box of JM smuggled in my bag for just that purpose when we go to the movies is his revenge for Les Miz).  And I've found a new anthem.

If "Defying Gravity,"  "Born This Way," and "This Is Me" don't give you a clue about who I am...clearly, you don't pay attention to lyrics.  ;)

After the movie, we went to Trolley Stop for dinner and almost had heart failure when we walked in.  The door was open.  There were no chairs.  The tables were bare.  Someone was painting over all the cool Mark Twain quotes on the wall.

The spousebeast and I have a heartbreaking track record of falling in love with a place, declaring it "ours"...and then it closes.  Any type of food, any type of vibe...doesn't matter.

Thankfully, they're just remodeling and, for some inexplicable reason, decided to stay open.  They're running a 2 dogs any style and a soda for $5.  We each only ordered one, some fries (OMG.  Fresh out of the fryer.  So good!), and a Yuengling for him and an Angry Orchard Rose for me (I have found my new favorite beverage!)...and BossMan knocked off the price of the soda.  How sweet!

As luck would have it, after supper, we were heading for the bus stop to see if the NU was still running when a cab pulled up next to us.  Willie the Hack (that's his preferred name.  Says it sounds "old school") just happened to have a fare out our way and offered to give us a lift down the hill for free.  <3

(Again, people ask me why I pay a bit more instead of using Uber or Lyft.  This would be one of the reasons)

Even more time passes....

Okay, this is the entry that will not end.  It is now Tuesday.  So, to sum up:

*my two days off rocked.  I could use about 20 more.

*since the Oscars, I'm not sure who all I want to be when I grow up, but I think Frances McDormand just took the lead.  Also, someone give me Helen Mirren's dress and a place to wear it, STAT.

*I'm loving this new trend of "simpler is better" re: food with the spousebeast.  He's an amazing cook, but some of his stuff can be a bit...overwrought. (I blame his dad on that one.  Amazing how quick I am to blame cooking flaws on the sins of the parents, eh?)

*I GET TO SEE JOAN BAEZ IN SEPTEMBER!!!!!!!

Yup, ya read it here first.  Our local venue put up a FB announcement cancelling the date and I freaked.  Turns out they'd listed it twice, but that was enough to send me into a panic (I've already lost out on tix to Cowboy Junkies).  I started researching resell sites, fell into despair ($192 for seats so far up chances are good you'll end up sitting next to a minor saint or two), then actually checked DPAC's website.  And there were still seats left!  So for less than the price of fighting over the armrest with St. Bob of West Hoboken, we got 2 really pretty good seats.  *squee*

Joan was my first concert.  How fitting I will be able to introduce her to the spousebeast on her final tour.

*Put out six more applications today.  New goal: employment elsewhere by St. Patty's day, with the goal of not spending that weekend at Happy Acres.  If not by then, DEFINITELY by Easter.

*Bowie Ball is this weekend!  Whee!!!!!  I've got my outfit halfway figured out.  Hair and makeup, though...that remains a challenge.

Okay...off to go snag some leftovers and gird my loins for the upcoming week.

Must be a place with one bathroom to charge that one dollar membership.

There are two, actually. :) The one dollar "membership" was a way to skirt an archaic NC law. That's since changed, but one of the funniest things (and I'm guilty of it, too) is the number of people who brag about their various membership cards. It's a weird way of proving "I am someone who actually LIVES here."

Ehh... I figure if you know how to cook and you occasionally fall off the cart... you should fall FAR off, and pizza rolls are that.

I eat a bag of pizza rolls at least twice a year... I KNOW.

Are you implying that guys from Jersey are armrest hogs?

IME, most men are armrest hogs. St. Bob just wanted to be from W. Hoboken.

Microwaved baked potatoes are a crime. Oven baked are so worth the wait.

This is Me has been running through my head pretty much constantly since we saw The Greatest Showman. Love, love, love the message behind the lyrics for that song.

Maybe it's cheating, but I cook the potatoes in the microwave for 5-10 min first (depending on how many potatoes/size) and then bake for an hour. Saves about 30 minutes in my experience, and you still get the yummy crispy skin!
